Inner outer self-variance and my deranged disembodied voices
2023
Electroacoustic & instrumental spatial work · Hybrid Audio Diffusion System (HADS) · Video · Duration: 13:37
Inner outer self-variance and my deranged disembodied voices is an immersive 3D musical work grounded in the phenomenon of auditory hallucinations — the perception of sound in the absence of an external acoustic source.
Auditory hallucinations are among the most common hallucinatory experiences. In some cases, they coexist with relatively normal daily life; in others, they profoundly disrupt perception, identity, and reality. This work seeks to give the audience an embodied experience of such altered auditory states.
The sonic material draws from both verbal and non-verbal hallucinations: voices commenting or narrating actions, thought echo, environmental resonance, tinnitus, machine-like sounds, hissing, whistling, animal calls, and musical hallucinations. These phenomena are explored through the performers and their instruments, AI-generated voices, synthesizers, field recordings, and live digital processing.
Throughout the performance, tensions between inner and outer perception are deliberately blurred, aiming to provoke moments of disorientation, heightened attention, and fragile instability.

Technical / performance description
The work was originally commissioned and premiered by The Black Page Orchestra at the Musikverein Wien in 2023. It deploys acoustic and electronic sources distributed across a surround loudspeaker array combined with open headphones for the entire audience.
This setup forms the Hybrid Audio Diffusion System (HADS), a performance configuration developed by the composer that enables the simultaneous perception of internalised (headphone-based) and externalised (loudspeaker-based) sound fields. The result is an augmented three-dimensional listening experience in which spatial perspective, proximity, and source identity remain in constant flux.
Subsequent performances have taken place in multiple spatial configurations, including versions without ensemble, and adaptations for large multichannel loudspeaker systems and acousmoniums.
