Heliocentric is inspired by the theory of Copernicus that bears the same name. Copernicus’s theory was revolutionary because it said that the earth and planets revolve around the sun, contrary to what was believed at the time. This piece begins with a musical gesture that is recorded and played back on a surround system orbiting the six speakers. This is repeated several times until eight musical gestures, representing each planet, are rotating around the sun, which is personified by the bass flute. The bass flute solo exerts the force of attraction and holds together the entire solar system.
