The axis mundi represents the center of the world and universe for many cultures. It also represents the union or path from different layers of existence in the universe. In the underworld the dead are living, the living inhabited the earth, and heaven is where the gods’ lives.
This concept is ideal for me to create music based on the union of elements from different cultures, like the instrumentation, that is a combination of traditions from America, Europe and Africa. In the timber layer, the percussion represents the underworld, the contrabass is the earth and the tárogató is heaven. In the formal layer, the piece is constructed in parts representing also the underworld, the earth and heaven, with different musical elements. They are ordered as a emotional journey commencing on earth as axis connecting the underworld and heaven through out the piece.
